Gmm Estimation of Linear Panel Data Models with Time-varying Individual Effects

چکیده
This paper considers models for panel data in which the individual effects vary over time. The temporal pattern of variation is arbitrary, but it is the same for all individuals. The model thus allows one to control for time-varying unobservables that are faced by all individuals (e.g., macroeconomic events) and to which individuals may respond differently. A generalized within estimator is consistent under strong assumptions on the errors, but it is dominated by a generalized method of moments estimator. This is perhaps surprising, because the generalized within estimator is the MLE under normality. The efficiency gains from imposing second-moment error assumptions are evaluated; they are substantial when the regressors and effects are weakly correlated.

Gmm with Many Moment Conditions By
1 This paper provides a first order asymptotic theory for generalized method of moments (GMM) estimators when the number of moment conditions is allowed to increase with the sample size and the moment conditions may be weak. Examples in which these asymptotics are relevant include instrumental variable (IV) estimation with many (possibly weak or uninformed) instruments and some panel data model...

ExpEnd is a Gauss programme for non-linear generalised method of moments (GMM) estimation of exponential models with endogenous regressors for cross section and panel data. The estimators included in this package are simple Poisson pseudo ML; GMM for cross section data using moment conditions based on multiplicative or additive errors; within groups fixed effects Poisson for panel data; GMM est...
متن کاملEstimation of Linear Panel Data Models Using Gmm
In this chapter we study GMM estimation of linear panel data models. Several different types of models are considered, including the linear regression model with strictly or weakly exogenous regressors, the simultaneous regression model, and a dynamic linear model containing a lagged dependent variable as a regressor. In each case, different assumptions about the exogeneity of the explanatory v...

This paper gives a selective review on the recent developments of nonparametric and semiparametric panel data models. We focus on the conventional panel data models with one-way error component structure, partially linear panel data models, varying coe¢ cient panel data models, nonparametric panel data models with multi-factor error structure, and nonseparable nonparametric panel data models. F...
متن کاملInference in High-Dimensional Panel Models With an Application to Gun Control
We consider estimation and inference in panel data models with additive unobserved individual specific heterogeneity in a high dimensional setting. The setting allows the number of time varying regressors to be larger than the sample size. To make informative estimation and inference feasible, we require that the overall contribution of the time varying variables after eliminating the individua...
